A Small Orange Review 2014 (Updated)
A Small Orange has been providing hosting services since 2003. Although it isn’t one of the best-known hosts in the industry, it has grown rapidly. Having originally been based in Atlanta, Georgia in the US, it is now located in Durham, North Carolina. The company was founded by Tim Dorr, a web designer, and bought out by Douglas Hanna in 2010. Hanna was customer service manager at HostGator and now serves as the CEO at A Small Orange. The takeover was co-funded by Brent Oxley, the founder of HostGator.
A Small Orange Hosting Plans
I seriously think that hosting choices at A Small Orange may just be a wee bit overdone. While being presented with rich choice is not a bad thing, but more likely too much variations could confuse the customers. It is no rocket science, but they have lots of different choices of web hosting for every category, definitely more than a handful for potential client to grasp with. It is easy to get confused but let us see what these options are:
Shared Web Hosting
Tiny: $35/year with 250MB Disk & 5GB Bandwidth
Small: $5/month with 1GB Disk & 20GB Bandwidth
Medium: $10/month with 5GB Disk & 100GB Bandwidth
Large: $20/month with 15GB Disk & 300GB Bandwidth
Super: $30/month with 25GB Disk & 500GB Bandwidth
Reseller Web Hosting
Small: $15/mo with 3GB Disk, 30GB B/W, & 30 hosted sites
Medium: $25/mo with 5GB Disk, 50GB B/W, & 50 hosted sites
Large: $35/mo with 10GB Disk, 100GB B/W, & 100 hosted sites
Small: $15/mo with 3GB Disk, 30GB B/W, & 30 hosted sites
Medium: $25/mo with 5GB Disk, 50GB B/W, & 50 hosted sites
Large: $35/mo with 10GB Disk, 100GB B/W, & 100 hosted sites
Business Web Hosting
Startup: $20/mo with 10GB Disk & 100GB Bandwidth
Small Business: $40/mo with 20GB Disk & 200GB Bandwidth
Enterprise: $60/mo with 30GB Disk & 300GB BandwidthKeep in mind that as is often the case with web hosting companies, you can get these same plans for much lower prices using promotional codes, discount and coupons. You just have to keep an eye out for such offerings.
The company has a small section about its data centre, but the information provided is very vague. It’s not clear how many there are, or where the facilities are located. The site does say that the company’s servers are monitored with CCTV and protected with backup battery and diesel power.
Customer service is clearly a key consideration, but there isn’t much information about the company as a whole on its website, which is a shame. If more details were provided about the people behind the company, it would inspire confidence and give A Small Orange more of a human touch.

Support is provided 24/7, all year round, via email and ticket. Live chat support is only provided on weekdays, and it appears that there’s no telephone support. Again, this is probably because the support team is scattered across the US.
A customer support forum is provided as a support tool, but the company admits that this shouldn’t be considered an official channel for getting help.
A Small Orange Extras
A Small Orange does not appear to place great emphasis on freebies or vouchers. There’s nothing to speak of; the host prefers to stress the quality of its support.
There’s no such policy for other plans.

A Small Orange appears to be reputable and I was impressed with the clarity of its website content. Its refund policy is also a big plus point.
A Small Orange is one of my favorite web hosts. I love that they take care of their customers, while keeping a green environment. Their web hosting is inexpensive, reliable, and full of quality features. On top of all of that, the company offers a lengthy money back guarantee of 90 days.
Give them a try, I promise you will not be disappointed. And if you are, refunds are available within 90 days.

A Small Orange - Uptime/Downtime
A Small Orange advertises a 99.9% uptime guarantee. The company has a live status page, but this is hidden behind a login, and there’s no archived uptime information available. The company has a small section about its data centre, but the information provided is very vague. Support : A Very Responsive Customer Support
In interviews, CEO Douglas Hanna has stated that many of A Small Orange’s technical support team members work remotely - some of them in different parts of the US. This probably explains the lack of clear detail about its team on the website; unlike many hosts, this isn’t a company that has in-house personnel working within arm’s reach of its servers.Support is provided 24/7, all year round, via email and ticket. Live chat support is only provided on weekdays, and it appears that there’s no telephone support. Again, this is probably because the support team is scattered across the US.

A Small Orange Control Panel
All A Small Orange customers are provided with cPanel (and WHM, if applicable). This isn’t necessarily free on the more powerful plans, though, so double check the cost of a licence before signing up.A Small Orange Extras
A Small Orange does not appear to place great emphasis on freebies or vouchers. There’s nothing to speak of; the host prefers to stress the quality of its support.
A Small Orange Money Back Guarantee / Cancellation Policy
Customers who sign up to a shared hosting or business hosting plan at A Small Orange can claim a refund under its 45-day money-back guarantee. If you want to cancel your plan after that point and you’ve paid annually, the company will refund your unused time, which is a very positive policy. There’s no such policy for other plans.

A Small Orange - Conclusion (Highly Recommended)
A Small Orange strikes me as a straight-up host that’s clear about its packages and services. Most customers should feel well-informed; it doesn’t try to overstate itself or market its hosting with gimmicks, and its website is well-structured and appealing.A Small Orange appears to be reputable and I was impressed with the clarity of its website content. Its refund policy is also a big plus point.
